Description

Recorded on Tuesday May 31, 2022 12-1pm EDT Cancer among Indigenous Peoples is increasing faster than overall Canadian rates. Many Indigenous peoples do not engage in survivorship services because of racism, lack of trust, and lack of culturally safety. While Indigenous Peoples have demonstrated resilience, the intergenerational trauma from colonization, government policies and residential schools continues to marginalize Indigenous people from cancer survivorship care. Indigenous knowledge and values are poorly incorporated into dominant health care systems today. Dr. Gifford presented aspects of her research that is co-creating the meaning of culturally safe cancer survivorship care with First Nations and Inuit communities.
