RECORDING: Co-creating culturally safe cancer survivorship care with Indigenous Peoples

Cancer among Indigenous Peoples is increasing faster than overall Canadian rates. Many Indigenous peoples do not engage in survivorship services because of racism, lack of trust, and lack of culturally safety.   

While Indigenous Peoples have demonstrated resilience, the intergenerational trauma from colonization, government policies and residential schools continues to marginalize Indigenous people from cancer survivorship care. Indigenous knowledge and values are poorly incorporated into dominant health care systems today.    

Dr. Gifford presented aspects of her research that is co-creating the meaning of culturally safe cancer survivorship care with First Nations and Inuit communities.

Her program of research focuses on promoting health equity with disadvantaged and marginalized groups, with a particular focus working with First Nations, Inuit, and Metis for culturally safe health care.  She recognizes that healthcare is founded on systemic settler racism that continues to disenfranchise and marginalize Indigenous Peoples today, which has increasingly situated her research within critical decolonizing methodologies and approaches. 

She has received generous funding from the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) and is currently working with Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation; Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada; Ottawa Aboriginal Coalition, and health providers working with homeless communities.

Prior to academia, she worked in First Nations communities in the Yukon Territory as an outpost nurse.
